I hate New Jersey

New Jersey drivers do not know how to drive properly in New York City. They never use their turn signal, they drive like they're sightseeing, they have an incredible sense of entitlement, and they're almost always on the phone. I've figured out that the worst cars on the road are white Mercedes SUVs with New Jersey plates. Each of these characteristics stand alone as a sign that the person will drive like an asshole, but put them together and you get the shittiest drivers ever. These are the ones that will dangerously cut you off, forcing you to slam on the brakes or swerve into oncoming traffic, and then, to add insult to injury, they will give you the finger because you honked. I'm not saying that the driver of the car in the photo did anything wrong (because that might be considered libel), but I'm not saying he didn't either.

A Pennsylvanian by birth, I used to share your sentiment. After living in South Jersey for the past 15+ years, I have changed my tune. Pennsylvanians and New Yorkers drive like tourists when in NJ. Just like Jerseyites do in the other two states and so on. There are the "by-the-book" rules of the road that everyone needs to follow and then there are the de-facto rules that apply to specific stretches of road during specific times of day. I could cite numerous examples, but suffice it to say that if you drive a particular stretch of road every day, you know the nuances of speed/swerve/potholes/bottlenecks that someone driving there for the first time does not. Of course there are cars of any state that are operated by assholes. They are assholes in every other facet of their miserable lives, so why should they be magically transformed when they get behind the wheel of their car?

I think you should blur the plate, even if he did cut you off :) I know I wouldn't want my plate on the internet.

Here where I live in England, the worst road users are Indians and Pakistanis (often private hire cab drivers too) who dirve like complete assholes. They will happily park up on the wrong side of the road with their headlights on full beam blinding oncoming traffic, before pulling out right across the traffic flow with no indication. Also having three schools in the area, the 4X4 set in the mornings and afternoons make life here quite unbearable.

I HAVE NEW JERSEY DRIVERS...EVERY SINGLE DAY I AM DRIVING DOWN THE PA TURNPIKE FROM FORT WASHINGTON TO THE QUAKERTOWN EXIT...AND I WILL BE DRIVING IN THE PASSING LANE GOING THE SPEED LIMIT (AND OVER THE SPEED LIMIT)...AND I GET TO A CAR WHO IS IN THE PASSING LANE WHO IS DRIVING 60 MPH..UNDER THE SPEED LIMIT...AND I STAY BEHIND THEM FOR A WHILE BECAUSE I THINK...OK MAYBE THEY ARE PASSING PEOPLE GOING SLOW IN THE RIGHT HAND LANE...BUT OOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHH NO...THEY ARE DRIVING 60 MPH IN THE PASSING LANE WITH MILES AND I MEAN MILES OF OPEN ROAD IN FRONT OF THEM...THEN OF COURSE I LOOK AND YES YES....F-IN NEW JERSEY...ITS LIKE...WHAT THE F IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE...GET A CLUE...YOUR MAKING ME CRAZY

Anonymous said...

It all depends on wether you are familiar with the area you are driving. Try following a new york cab on the jersey turnpike as he drives to newark airport. That is some lousy driving. oh, and maryland, pennsylvania, and especially new york drivers are horrific. Stay off the turnpike bigmouths!!!!!

You know what? I live in New Jersey and yes, we have idiots like everywhere else but more often than not, I encounter NEW YORKERS weaving in and out of lanes going at LEAST 10 miles OVER the speed limit honking and cursing at ME when I'm following the law. All with my 2 little ones in the back bewildered at what's going on. We do not have the traffic here that occurs in NY city that might warrant such behavior but yet I see it daily. How about I start posting NY license plates on a website of people that beep and honk at law abiding citizens only to get stuck at the same red light 20 feet ahead that I do??? It's amazing.... Again, YES we have idiots too that don't pay attention but you NY-ers need to slow down and be less aggressive. What's the point? Why can't everyone just be nice and slow down a bit? Remember how nice everyone was for a while after 9/11? It's a shame that people can't plan to leave their house a few minutes earlier to account for any traffic they may encounter. Maybe taking some responsibility for a change is in order instead of passing the blame. Can you say ARROGANCE??

'Remember how nice everyone was for a while after 9/11?'

there's how you know shes from jersey...make the 9/11 reference...you want to know why jersey sucks so much? here's one BIG reason, the new jersey legislature takes the new york legislature to the supreme court to decide who gets the rights to the statue of liberty. you fight tooth and nail, tooth and nail, and finally get it back. last i checked, no one drive to paterson to take a ferry to the statue of liberty. i believe most people come from south street seaport. and if we want to talk 9/11 lets talk about the financial blow that downtown manhattan took after 9/11. now, would new jersey say, "hey, lets help manhattan out and give back lady liberty, extra income to them" no, they dont, they keep her. my thoughts, give new jersey staten island, any place that crappy you have to pay $9.50 to get to deserves to go to new jersey...ill take the statue of liberty back thank you...new jersey is only good for 3 things :

1. to hold new york's garbage
2. to hold NEW YORK's football Giants
(last but not least)
3. WAWA

thats all

NY and NJ are officially the most aggressive, so why get mad at us for driving the same way u do when u come here...

i live at the jersey shore and in my experience pennsylvanians are the absolute worst drivers ive ever seen, people get cut off shit happens, but at least spped up once u cut people off dont go 45 damn mph!

Anonymous said...

I don't know its appropriate to display unblurred licence plate on internet. And since your blog is way above popular you probably need to consider about that.

I'm from New Jersey and I see out-of-state drivers that drive slow, don't know where they're going, almost causing traffic because...... they are not from this area!!!! That is understandable!!! If you are from New York City and drive in upstate New York are you going to instantly know where you are going? NO! You drive with caution. Don’t confuse that with “being an asshole”. If you do, then you are a dumb fuck! I don't give a shit where you're from, every state have asshole drivers!!!!

So. I am from New Jersey... but im currently living in brooklyn. I grew up in nj all my life and guess what... NEW JERSEY DRIVERS FUCKING SUCK AT DRIVING!!!! So do people from fucking florida. and just old people in general... Seriosly though. New jersey drivers are the worst dont even try to argue otherwise!

New York drivers are the worst I've ever seen. You never know where you're going, but you seem to need to drive 100mph regardless. OR... you'll sit in the left lane doing 65.

Stay off our beaches, stay off our roads.

i was born in brooklyn new york and a majority of my life in staten island, then i moved to new jersey. i hate it here with a passion. and i want to consider stabbing someone when they say that they are both the same.

if new jersey people hate how new yorkers drive

1. get out of our fucking way
2 DON'T COME TO NEW YORK.

WE DON'T LIKE YOU EITHER.

Anonymous said...

hey...im from nj and i agree with most of what your saying but delaware drivers are the WORST!

Anonymous said...

Amazing and ironic... a NYC cabbie complaining that someone else is a bad driver. We all know that NYC cabbies are the worst drivers. I can't count the number of times I have had to slam on my brakes to prevent being in an accident when a NYC cab has cut me off. What a joke this is!

Anonymous said...

I have lived in Jersey all my life except when I took a job out in Sacramento. I've driven cross country twice and I can say (1) East coast drivers are terrible drivers compared to West coast drivers (2) Jersey drivers do suck on many levels BUT (3) the FAR WORST drivers I have ever encoutered have to Pennslyvania. If you see these people on the road BE CAREFUL they make quick decisions, don't pay attention, drive under the speed limit, and cruise in the passing lane under the speed limit. Considering how many states I've been in on the East coast, the Mid-west and the West...I;m pretty sure Pennslyvania is the worst I've encountered.

Anonymous said...

I would just like to tell all of you Pennslyvania natives that here in New Jersey it is the law to stay to the right unless you are passing. And that means PASSING, not getting in the left lane and driving 15 miles under the speed limit. With shore season heating up to full swing I am so sick of sitting in traffic because some stupid Pennslyvania driver wants to hold up the left lane!!!!!

When in Jersey, drive like it. When I am in the city of brotherly hate I always make sure I'm driving just as shitty as you guys!!!!

Anonymous said...

I can tell you the reason why New Jersey is hated so much. I have lived in West Orange, New Jersey my whole life and it starts with Newark. People judge New Jersey just for New York for its filth. But trust me its not like that in all of new jersey. If the placed sucked also how come we have such a high population in such a small state. And living in different areas also changes are driving precautions. In New Jersey there arent to many cities aside from Newark and Jersey City. Traffic goes smoothly and when they drive they try to be careful, And rush hour also, a sinch. And also why cant we get along. The last thing we need is more fighting.

Anonymous said...

This is a great site! I grew up in PA, but now live in NC. And Jersey people are flocking here by the thousands every year. And bringing their sucky asshole attitudes with them, too. And you're right when you say "entitlement". I never could put a word to it until I read your post. They come here and think they can bully everyone and they're always surprised when I get up in their face about their rudeness and lousy driving habits. But, of all the places I've been in, NC by far has THE worst drivers. Maybe that's because of the invasion of Jerseyites, though? lol!

Anonymous said...

I absolutely agree NJ drivers suck major ass. ESPECIALLY the SUV or a.u.v. or asshole utility vehicle drivers. I recently bought a good sized pickup and EVERY time and I DO mean EVERY time one of those pukes in an suv gets on my tail when I`m going 5 miles over the limit or they try to rush me to get to their exit because they don`t want to use extra gas to get around, they get slowed down. Mr. K

Anonymous said...

Dude I agree 100%. NJ not only blows, but every one of those motherfuckers drives like a maniac in NYC. Its not just disregarding our local rules and regulations, its a complete lack of common sense. Every dangerous maneuver I've seen performed on the NYC streets was done by someone with NJ plates. Also, their state troopers (in NJ) are the rudest pencil dick cops I've ever encountered.

Anonymous said...

Seriously - NY people ... you have no idea how badly you drive. You just think you're driving well because you can't see beyond the purple/peeling tint on your Walmart Enhanced piece of junk automobile.

Take a gander next time you're on the Pawkway headed "Sowf" to "Belmawr."

You may want to blur that plate too - unless you enjoy the chance of being sued unmercifully by my fellow NJ friends.

Anonymous said...

I'm a Bergen County guy, and I know a bad driver when I see one. NY plates, SUV with guy yelling at cell phone trying to weave through traffic as if his life is more important than everyone else's. Another one is if you substitute the guy with the SUV and cell phone with a crappy 90's Honda with rims that cost more than the car, also weaving through traffic - this time the car sounds like a weedwacker.

Anonymous said...

Hey, guess what? New York drivers AND New Jersey drivers SUCK! I'm from Lancaster, PA, and whenever someone pulls a shitty and it turns out they're from NY or NJ, we say, "Well, that figures." I also work in Guest Services at a local tourist attraction... guess who the biggest assholes of customers are that I get? Oh, that's right, NY'ers and NJ'ers. Maybe if you would all just slow down (not just driving, but with life) and learn to be a little more polite...

Anonymous said...

Agreed. Both states suck.

I'm from New Jersey, and people do drive pretty badly. You either have idiots weaving through traffic and cutting people off, or other idiots driving slow as hell and turning right into your lane when you're going faster.

I had a New York driver in a Mercedes SUV cut me off when I was going 10 over the limit, about five feet in front of my car and without a turn signal. It was nuts.

Now, I drive pretty fast, but I do so sensibly. I don't speed ridiculously in bad weather (though unfortunately I see people doing 80+ in howling wind and rain on the interstate), and when I do go 80 in good weather, I stay in the left lane.

Anonymous said...

HAHA you New Yawkas are the most arrogant, ridiculous assholes imaginable. New JERSEY drivers are bad?!?! Yeah right. New York drivers are the WORST! Like others have said: GET A CLUE - THE LEFT LANE IS FOR PASSING, NOT FOR CRUISING AT OR BELOW THE SPEED LIMIT. And get off your cell phone with your awful accent so that you can drive like a normal person.

Yeah NJ is so bad. Why is it then that EVERY weekend there are thousands of New Yawkas invading NJ to house hunt or go to the NJ shore? You vilify it then turn around and buy homes and vacation here.

NY sucks. The people are all elitist assholes with horrible accents. I thank God that if I want to go to NYC for something (twice a year maybe) I can go in and get the F OUT back to nice open space.

F New Yawk.

Anonymous said...

Yea here's the thing,NJ drivers drive like assholes, but we choose to drive like assholes. NY drivers drive like assholes because, they don't know any better. Here's my proof. If you try to merge in the L.I.E. they won't let you in. Here's the thing if you try to let a New York driver in they honestly don't know what to do. Rather then go they will give you a look like why aren't you speeding past me. Oh, yea and why are there so many SUV's and Land Rovers on long island? It's the flattest place in the freakin country. It's an island! it's at Sea leverl!

Anonymous said...

The reason Jersey drivers suck so bad is because the roads are awful. I have never seen such bad civil planning in my life and I'm not a civil engineer. They have signs 2 minutes before the exit on the other side of the road, a merging lane in the middle of traffic, no shoulder, roads that go from one lane to two without warning, and all this other nonsensical planning that is unintuitive. I always say it New Jersey is the Mississippi of the Mid Atlantic states so that makes Jersey people dumb southerners.

Anonymous said...

I live in NJ (all my life) and nothing makes me hate it more than the gun laws. My passon is gun collecting and i can't even buy an AK or AR?????? Why do they look to dangerous to you NJ???? Responsible people should be allowed to own what they want. I cant wait to move to PA.

Anonymous said...

Everything about new jersey suck. Jughandles (WTF), the complete lack of merging lanes, the ugly people, etc... I would not be against a major cataclysm befalling this wretched state and wiping it off the face of the earth

Sadly I recently moved to NJ, which I had no control over. I absolutely hate driving here! I almost get killed everyday. NJ drivers all need to chill. Yea, I also think the yellow license plates are yuck. They used to be blue, what happened to that?

Anonymous said...

you New Yorkers.

what f-in assholes.

you people are the most stubborn arrogant people in the f-in world who need to learn a thing or two about Jersey, you f-in assholes think you're so tough. yea right: 2 little 5 year old girls from Jersey could beat the shit out of every little pussy on Staten Island, WHICH WAS PART OF NEW JERSEY, (thank you very much Duke of York for being a little pussy about it). and THE STATUE OF LIBERTY IS OURS.

all you New Yorkers have to frickin grow up.

and just for the record, none of you f-in New Yorkers can drive, you f-in asshole "wanna-be Italians."

Anonymous said...

I have to say the worst Drivers in the US are NJ drivers, and thats not just my opinion, NJ auto insurance is the highest in the US. If we think about what makes insurance high, it involves the things that your are insuring against happening often. In this case crashing your dumb ass into another car.

NYC, and Philadelphia drivers suck too but the rest of PA and NY are fine.

Anonymous said...

I sware to God, everytime i get pissed at someone when I'm driving, I look at there plates and I see the ugly piece of shit jersey plates!!! Idk y I hate jersey people but I think its something I was born with. I hate when they try to have new york accents, but they sound like retards for even trying! And another thing that pisses me off is wen people say new York / new jersey giants..get the fuck outa here!!! The only good thing about jersey is their beaches, but other than that they r bitches!! Oh and everytime I go over the bridge I almost die because I have to hold my breath for so long..fucking smells!!

Anonymous said...

New Yorkers are so stupid when it comes driving, polution, accents, school testing scores, crime rate, and thier driving plate is garbage. New Yorkers all live in apartments and always think they can do anything... YOU CAN"T! And the staue of Liberty is not the color it should be! You should take care of it dumbies! and NJ sounds better then NY. New York is for LOSERS!

Anonymous said...

People who bash NJ really do not know anytihng about it. Only 5% of the state is characterized correctly by out of state stereotypes (north central jersey by nyc and also the philly area). NJ actually mostly smells like..trees and farms. NJ is also home to the pine barrens, cited as one of many an important ecological systems in the WORLD. NJ drivers know how to drive in their state..the entire culture is fast..if you don't drive fast in NJ and learn that things like "yield" don't really mean yield..you won't survive. Also, NJ's high rates of auto insurance are basically due to the high pop. density of the state. If you live and drive in NJ you are statistically guaranteed to have at least 2 accidents in your lifetime simply because there are too many cars. Also, NJ people do not try to imitate ny accents and they do not use the word "joisey". The truth is that NJ people like the badass reputation and all the jokes..it's just a game and it's fun to bash NYers but we really don't hate anyone except for slow drivers. NJ is actually listed in the top 10 smartest states every year and is one of the wealthiest states in the nation. Whatever you do though..watch out while in Camden, Newark, or Elizabeth aka run red lights at night(it's actually safer). ^^

Anonymous said...

I live in Northern Morris county in New Jersey and I have to say that I HATE NEW YORK DRIVERS! They drive like they are still in the city while it's nothing but forest all'round you. So that being said I think that hatred for different state drivers varies from state to state...so leave NJ alone.

Anonymous said...

new jersey drivers KNOW how to drive it's just those damn females that do all that shit out there plus i think new jersey drivers are more curtious to pedestrians. new yorks that's a no-no.

Anonymous said...

being real... i gotta cosign the person in the beginning who said that new yorkers and pa people can't drive in jersey and jersey people can't drive in pa and new york. but i also would like to add that jersey people CANNOT drive for shit. in nyc, the people can't drive for shit either (try going on them highways, it's NO joke. you're gambling with your life on them roadways no joke) but that's just a city. when you compare ny state or nj state drivers and i'm talking about upstate new york and such, new jersey has the WORST drivers. you can go to a suburb in new jersey and people still drive horrible over there, doing all kinds of off the wall shit that even people in nyc don't be doing.

Anonymous said...

I hate New Jersey, I wish the state of New Jersey was blown up by a nuclear bomb from Korea, USSR, or Iran and be left out as 49 states! New Jersey sucks, no wonder why they named the NHL hockey team New Jersey Devils!

Anonymous said...

New Jersey deserves to get blown up because nobody (outside New Jersey) likes the state of New Jersey. It would be as funny as hell to see New Jersey get blown up. I would totally crack up if that happened soon!

Anonymous said...

It's actually quite ironic. The left and middle lanes on a highway are for passing ONLY. Yet I constantly see NY plated drivers way below the speed limit in the middle and left lanes not passing anyone. It's pretty sad. I'd say roughly 6 out of 10 NYers I see do so.

I'm a NJ driver and I signal before every turn.

Not to start a battle, but let's not say we dislike NJ drivers because not all NJ drivers act the same.

Anonymous said...

Jersey drivers do suck. but jersey RULES!

Anonymous said...

New Jersey drivers are the top drivers in the WORLD.

By far new jersey drivers and pa drivers are the worst. Hands down. freaking come to ny to show they have skills but they just dont know how to drive on local roads they are just used to driving on turnpikes and highways. This guy with nj plates throws a bottle at me for not letting him pass when he is door to door with me then he has the nerves to curse at me and show the middle finger. Do us all a favor and stay in your dumpster state.

Anonymous said...

Yea, New Jersey Kinda sucks- hell I've been in 'near accidents' many times when I lived there- As A Born Jersey Girl I can truthfully say they do have idiotic drivers.

But in truth, no offense, but when ever someone says 'sucky drivers' 'New York' comes first to mind xD

New York is actually more dangerous than New Jersey in Driving.

Anonymous said...

I am from New Jersey and I am so god damn proud of it. I will probably not live out my entire life here, but this state has given me something valuable that those other 49 state's full of whiny bitches could never give me. This state gave me a level of extroversion, confidence, and distinguished manhood that only comes from surviving in this kind of urban jungle. Listen, frankly we people from NJ could give a flying fuck what the rest of the country thinks about our driving skills. Our hatred is mutual for those who burden us with their own ignorance. Now, for all those thinking irrationally, lets begin to think rationally. New Jersey is the most densely populated state, with almost 9 million people. It is also the most racially diverse state. Therefore rationally, not EVERYONE is an asshole and a supposed "bad driver". Now, I will admit that we do have a tendency to be more "forward" than most. However, that is only a result of the area in which we live. We are just extroverts who aren't afraid to speak our minds. And so with that being said, to those who have a problem with us...YOUR GARBAGE GO FUCK YOURSELF! P.S. NYC is nothing without the Jerz and they know it. Most people who work in the city cannot afford to live there. Figure out the implication on your own.

Anonymous said...

haha okay new jersey drivers are pretty aggressive. but ommggggg pennsylvania drivers are soo bad. they suck. LIke if your gonna drive in new jersey you gotta know where your going. cuz im from new jersey and the reason were so mean is because we know the roads like the back of our hands and when theres someone slowing us down because there lost or site seeing or whateves. well its kind of annnoiyng! its called a map people. and really why would u post someone plate numbers up on the enternet? you really should blurr that out. and btw i know its the same for every state that you need to know where your going. blah blahh yeah yeah i know.

Oh Man this is so true. I go to school in Nj so unfortunately I dorm here as well. Im from Queens, Ny. Im sorry but I have to agree. People from New Jersey CANNOT drive. Is it really asking too much for them to signal!!???? I mean really..

Anonymous said...

people who says nj drivers sucks bcas they are jealous of us. They are jealous bcas they don't have balls to drive like us. If you are coming to NJ and staying in left lane and and not let anyone pass you are going to get your ass beaten up. If personally i was driving on parkway or turnpike i would go ahead of you and slam my breaks, and also throw bottles at you. PA drivers suck cas they don't know shit. If i was a cop i would just give out tickets to PA plates in NJ for going slow and staying on left lane, and bcas of that NJ insurance won't even go up

Anonymous said...

Oh, New Jerseyites. So proud of your armpit you call a state. It's known fact that your entire state lacks the basic operation skills of a motor vehicle. Do they even see if you know where the turn signals are when you take the driving test? Because i think only 5 people from NJ actually use them. Maybe it is also contributed to the fact that NJ's roads and highway system is totally fucked and you don't even know where you are going in your own state when you take an exit. The only redeeming factor of a Jersey driver is the fact that you guys have a license plate on the back AND front of your vehicle. At least then i can tell where you are from wether you are approaching me or in front of me, and take the proper precautions to make sure i am not a victim of vehicular homicide courtesy of your inability to drive.

New Jersey is a corrupt, liberal flat rest stop state that feeds off the
scraps of New York and Philadelphia. It being such a flat marshland it
floods all the time and is some of the crappiest land in the country.
Their Nazi state police storm troopers target out of state drive to
pull over and ticket, as they know that they have jobs and won't be
able to take off from work and fight the ticket(which they wouldn't win
anyway because they take it out on them they they are stick in such a
sh!t hole. Its is a bunch a stupid liberal retards that can't drive.
They vote for homosexual governors that cheat on their wives with their
staffers. They drive their SUV's slow in the left passing lane;
breaking their own laws. And go to PA and NY and screw up the traffic
there. It is illegal to talk on a mobile phone while driving, can't
make left turns so they need jug handles because they are so dumb. And
they wonder why their car insurance is so expensive. Ever since America
was taking shape in the days of the revolution those wimps voted
against independence from the limes (England). It is filled with trash
like Trenton, Newark, Hoboken, and of course Jersey City. They take
pride in their tomatoes which feed off they radiation in the soil from
all their nuke plants. But we can thank them idiots for paying high
property taxes for their crappy houses so their tax on gasoline is
lower, so I can fill up on there cheaper gas.
